What are the course times?
Our courses run from 09:30-18:30 with ~45-60 minutes for lunch and a few minutes between modules, after the labs. The last session of every day is a lab, which means that those that need to get away early after the last module (eg to catch a train) may do so, although we strongly encourage students to complete all lab work. Where are the courses held?
Our courses in Summer/Autumn 2007 will be held at Merlin House, 122-126, Kilburn High Road, London, NW6 4HY map There is a large and varied selection of restaurants/cafes (from Thai to American burgers to Mediterranean to Costa Coffee ...) within a 150m radius of Merlin House. See belowfor info on accommodation, parking and transport. [top]
Are there any hotels close by?
Students have told us that hotels in this part of London get booked-up very early, but if you do need accommodation you may wish to start by checking out the two places below; both are ~10 minutes walk from Merlin House and both had a few rooms left on both the Friday (27 September) and Saturday (28 September) nights when we enquired (on the morning of 23 August): http://www.charlotteguesthouse.co.uk/ (decent value, bed and breakfast) http://www.marriott.com/hotels/travel/lonwh-london-marriott-hotel-maida-vale/ (international chain which EU students on previous courses have been satisfied, but higher prices). You can also search for "hotel London NW6" at maps.google.co.uk . [top]
How about buses/trains/the underground and car parking?
Transport links are excellent. There are 3 tube (underground) stations within 10 minute walk (West Hampstead, Kilburn and Kilburn Park). West Hampstead is on the Jubilee Line, 17 minutes direct from Waterloo (good for Eurostar users). Our local train stations, also within a few minutes walk, are Kilburn High Road, Brondesbury, West Hampstead and West Hampstead Thameslink (good for Gatwick Airport, also direct, ~45-60 minutes). There are many bus routes, in most directions, with stops just outside Merlin Ho use. See http://www.tfl.gov.uk/ for full details or contact us if you are uncertain about how to get to Merlin House. Parking to the West of Merlin House is free at the weekend, however, you should allow some time to find an empty space. There are also car parks which are quite good value at the weekend. [top]
Can I use my own laptop for the lab work?
If you'd like to use your own laptop (with JDK 5 and Eclipse 3.3 installed and in good working order), let us know by email what operating system it is running (Linux/MacOS/Windows are all OK) and if you need us to provide an adapter for UK power sockets (important for those of you coming from Europe). The laptops we provide for students for use during the labs run Windows. [top]
Why weekends?
When I was teaching Sun's java (SL-275, SL-285, SL-301) and OOAD (00-226) courses in the late 1990s, the project manager I was working with at Cap Gemini was bemoaning the fact that even though he wanted to send his consultants on some courses, his clients would not be happy if he pulled them off their "critical" projects. I suggested to Sun and Cap that I could teach the courses in the evenings during the week and complete the course over the weekend. The rest is history... [top]

Can you make custom courses if we have enough interest at our company?
Can we organise a course on-site?
How about weekday courses for those of us who can't make weekend sessions?
We would be happy to consider your requirements for custom and/or on-site courses. We would generally need at least 2 weeks notice to prepare a custom course covering material we already use for our weekend courses. [top]

  • The 2-day Swing course was informative and brilliantly paced []
"The 2-day Swing course was informative and brilliantly paced, despite the mixed knowledge of the various participants. The instructor had excellent knowledge of the subject and was willing and able to answer any questions thrown at him. This included subjects only loosely related to the subject matter (such as Design Patterns and Threads in general.) All in all, a recommended course for anyone using Swing."

"Thanks for an interesting and productive weekend. I felt the Wicket course was exactly what we were looking for and had a good balance between presentations, discussion and hands on tinkering. Even though our group came from radically different development backgrounds I think everyone came away with a useful understanding of the framework. Al has a clear presentation style and you both successfully fielded queries from beginners, experienced wicketeers, and talented web developers used to other ways of doing things... i doff my cap to you."
  • Morten Steffensen, Emercos, Denmark
It is amazing how much you can learn in just 2 days! []
" A subcontractor had recommended the Apache Wicket course arranged by JWeekend, I finally found the time to participate March 21-22. Alastair and Cemal did a very good job at teaching Wicket with lots of hands-on tutorials. It is amazing how much you can learn in just 2 days! My ideal web stack is now wicket/spring/jpa/hibernate and I feel very efficient :)"
